When you have a tree removed, you may not realize it, but typically it does not include the price of stump removal or stump grinding. Except for very small trees where the stump can be dug out by hand, for most trees you will need a stump grinder.

It is possible for some small to medium size trees to rent a stump grinder. The stump should be cut as low to the ground as possible during the tree removal process. Some people just decide to leave the stump there.

There are a lot of factors that influence cost when considering stump removal. They include;

• Tree Species

The type of tree makes the process easier or harder. Of course, the trees that are hard and dense prove a little more difficult than those with more porous wood. The former will cost more. But it also depends on the growth habit of the species. Some have very shallow roots and others have a large tap root. This will be more expensive as it is more time and labor consuming.

• Depth of Stump Grinding

Most companies will grind the stump down to 4-6 inches below ground level. If you want more of the stump ground out, this will cost more so you need to make sure you understand what will be done. If you want to plant in that location or near that location, you will need to have more ground out.

• Stump Removal vs. Stump Grinding

If you want to plant another tree or shrubs in that location you may need stump removal instead of stump grinding. This is more labor and is more expensive. Also, the stump will need to be lifted and hauled away which requires more equipment

• Clean-up

The mixture of dirt and wood chips from grinding the stump are usually left to fill up the hole where the stump was ground. For larger stumps, the resulting chips can be enough to leave a mound. Removing the chips and filling with topsoil is usually extra. You can use the chips as mulch or you can compost the chip / dirt mixture.
